BIOGRAPHY

Patrick Lui is an award-winning pianist, composer, arranger, and producer. Since graduating from Berklee College of Music, he has won the Marvin Hamlisch International Music Award (Jazz Composition), the Taichung Jazz Festival Piano Competition, and was a semi-finalist at the Bucharest International Jazz Competition. His jazz orchestra piece Mirror Dance was the first jazz composition nominated for “Best Serious Composition” at the CASH Golden Sail Music Awards. His work as a co-producer with pop group RubberBand has garnered accolades including “Album of the Year” and “Song of the Year” from Commercial Radio Hong Kong, as well as the “Best Song” award at the CASH Golden Sail Music Awards.

 

An internationally active jazz pianist and composer, Patrick has performed his original works alongside artists such as Alex Sipiagin, Will Vinson, the Kyoto Composers Jazz Orchestra, and the Taipei Jazz Orchestra. He has appeared at festivals including JENerations Jazz Festival (USA), EUROPAfest (Romania), Takatsuki Jazz Street Festival (Japan), Kanazawa Street Jazz Festival (Japan), Taichung Jazz Festival (Taiwan), Clockenflap (Hong Kong), Freespace Jazz Festival (Hong Kong), and the Hong Kong Jazz Marathon.

 

In 2024, he was invited by the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers (ISJAC) to present one of his big band arrangements at their biennial symposium held in Nashville. That same year, he performed and presented his big band rearrangements of Hong Kong film music with Shiho and the Kyoto Composers Jazz Orchestra at the Yokohama International Performing Arts Meeting (YPAM), bringing the voice of Hong Kong to an international audience. His own jazz orchestra has been invited by the Jazz Education Network (JEN) in the U.S. to perform at their annual conference, and has headlined the Freespace Jazz Festival for six consecutive years. The orchestra was also invited by Alliance Française to perform Jazz in French Films at the French May festival, featuring rearrangements of jazz featured in iconic French cinema.

 

Beyond jazz and pop, Patrick is also an accomplished classical pianist. He has appeared as a soloist with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, performing Michel Camilo’s Suite for Piano, Strings and Harp and Claude Bolling’s Suite for Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Piano Trio. He has also collaborated with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra as arranger and pianist for a concert tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker.

 

As a composer, Patrick contributed to the scores of three feature films — The Bounty, This Is Not What I Expected, and Chasing the Dragon. To broaden his musical horizons, he was awarded a full scholarship by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and completed his Master’s degree at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with distinction, furthering his studies in traditional music.

 

Patrick’s debut big band album Sonder was released in 2020. Recorded in New York City at the renowned Systems Two Recording Studio, the album featured all New York-based jazz musicians including Alex Sipiagin, and was recorded, mixed, and mastered by two-time Grammy Award winner Mike Marciano. Sonder was distributed by Sony Music.

 

Patrick will serve as music director and composer for the Hong Kong Dance Company’s 2025 original production The Martial Artistry, created in celebration of the 85th birthday of legendary martial artist Bruce Lee.
